Pirate Sites

Just recently I've had a few people ask me about pirating sites. Here's the thing, I hate them. An author gets nothing from a download and let's be honest, getting a book from one of those sites is illegal but more so, it's morally wrong. If you don't have the money to purchase a book, then you wait until you do, or you wait for a discounted or free promotion. Downloading the book via a pirate website is not the option and is actually opening yourself up to potential hacks and viruses.

How to spot a pirate site - this can be tough. Other than the big companies - Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes etc, there are others that are legit. However, here are a few questions to ask yourself when looking at a website.

Are all the books, including new releases free?

Does the site offer books not available at places like Amazon, iBooks etc?

Does the site mention limitless downloads for a flat fee?

If the answer is yes, the chances are you're looking at a pirate site. Lots of internet providers now block known pirate sites, however, new ones are always popping up. A good rule to work by - if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

If you've been directed to a site and you're unsure, ask. Indie authors especially have a huge presence on social media and I'm sure they'd much rather you reach out to them and ask, rather than download the book from a potential pirate website. Just make sure you don't post the link to the site publicly, even to raise awareness. You can also reach out to me, here or on any of my social media links and I'll be happy to help.
