Going Under is a brilliant debut by Anna Bishop Barker. Although, I'm thinking maybe she's been holding out on us, because it doesn't come across as a first book.
I have to admit, I've actually been aware of Anna for almost a year now and have been wildly entertained by her Titan Voicemail posts in Cristin Harber's readers group - Team Titan. However, nothing prepared me for quite how good this book truly was. Anna Bishop Barker is an excellent storyteller and her writing is incredibly entertaining, I read the book in two sittings (only because I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer on the first sitting). It is well written and feels like a lot of thought went into this story and how to handle some of the subject matters just right, I'm not going to lie, a couple of scenes were hard to take and some readers may find them upsetting. However, they are a vital part of the story and it wouldn't have been as powerful as it was without them. It is well thought out, funny - I burst into laughter several times, it's emotional and I'll warn you; you're probably going to cry, I did...more than once. Max and Becca have lots to deal with but it makes their relationship oh so sweet..and perfect. If like me, you're a geek at heart, you're going to love some of the things said and there are some fantastic references. Fans of the Titan group will not be disappointed with some of the interactions in the book. The characters sound and feel just like the characters you know and love. (That's all I'll say about that - see? No spoilers ). My only complaint (if you can call it that) is that the book wasn't longer, I wanted more time with this couple. Did I mention I'm in love with Max? You can look at him, but no touching. Definitely a solid 5 stars and I'm looking forward to reading much more from Anna in the future.
I was asked by a dear friend how this book made me feel...in one word (I cursed her, don't worry), the answer didn't come to me immediately, as there were many things to consider about this book. However, the underlying feeling throughout the book for me was optimism. So that's my word OPTIMISTIC!
